Scenic Ibiza
Located off the coast of Spain, the island of Ibiza is unarguably one of the most sought after tourist destinations in the world. Great beaches, mouthwatering cuisine, some of the best music and parties in the world and an easy access to a stash of drugs are just some of the reasons that make Ibiza a favorite among Mediterranean vacationers, especially the hippie types. Before the island came into prominence, its larger neighbor, Majorca, was the more popular tourist attraction. It was during the 1950s that the island's art colony flourished and in the next decade it grew in popularity, attracting the flower children of the 60s and 70s. Life on the island is characterized by a laidback atmosphere, making it perfect for a relaxing vacation, soaking up the Ibiza sun.
Ibiza covers an area of about 225 sq. miles (585 sq km). The coastline is uneven and jagged. The island boasts of several fine beaches, secluded bays and cliffs. The hilly terrain is dotted by fig and olive trees, typical to the Mediterranean climate. The island has warmer weather as compared to its neighbor Majorca, making it more suitable for winter vacations. However, the influx of tourists in the summer season can be intimidating, and most hotels, resorts and beaches tend to get overcrowded.
Ibiza is renowned for its beaches. The Playa Talamanca is a popular beach in the northern region of the island, whereas Ses Figueretes. Las Salinas and Playa d'en Bossa are located to the south. Those who want to get a complete tan can also visit the nude beaches of Playa Cavallet and Aigues Blanques. Some other good beaches are Cala Bassa, Port des Torrent, Cala Tarida, and Cala Conta. All these can be reached by a short bus or boat ride from San Antonio de Portmany. Es Pujols is the most popular beach of Ibiza. It boasts of pure white sands set against a backdrop of pines and dunes.
Drug trafficking is a rampant on the island. Many visitors, especially the younger crowd, experiment with various banned substances, ranging from weed and hash to LSD and cocaine. While this might be a major attraction for many, it also proves to be the reason for deportation due to disorderly conduct. Hence, tourists are advised to exercise caution when dealing with drugs or traffickers.
Ibiza Town (Ciutat d'Eivissa) is the most happening place on the island. In Ibiza, most visitors stay in rented apartments or small hotels. People usually spend their days on the beaches at Ses Salines and Es Cavellet. People throng the whitewashed port area which houses a lot of trendy boutiques and stalls trading in jewelry. Bars are open till the early hours of morning and some of the largest nightclubs in the world are sure to keep the crowds well entertained. For those who want to take a break from the pulsating party life, several shopping options as well as museums and art galleries are worth a visit.
